Course Description:
This class helps strengthen the baseline skills in finance required to make well-informed business decisions. The purpose of the class is further develop your financial skills and understanding so that you can better fulfill your due diligence duties - and add value as a subject matter expert and business partner within your organization.
Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of this class students should:
- Better understand the four basic Financial Statements
- Be able to perform basic financial statement analysis
- Better understand the qualitative analysis of companies
- Understand time value of money and discounted cash flow
- Use NPV and other tools to help make wise investment and business decisions
- Understand the marginal/relevant cost approach to decision making

Wes Friesen is the Manager of Revenue Collections & Community Offices for Portland General Electric, a utility with over 800,000 customers and annual revenue of $1.5 billion. Wes has been at PGE 28 years, and manages several departments: Printing & Automated Mail Services (which prints 35 million pages & mails 12 million customer bills/notices and other company documents annually), Cash Remittance Services (which processes over 5 million customer payments annually), Customer Payment Options (which administers the company’s electronic and 3rd party payment programs) and the Company’s seven Community Offices (which receive walk-in customer payments and provide other customer services).
Wes and the PGE print & mail operations were the featured cover stories on the April/May 2000 issue of Mail Magazine, the February 2002 issue of IPMA’s Perspectives magazine and the February 2008 issue of In-Plant Graphics. Wes received the 2001 “Technical Excellence Award” from MailCom & MSMA, PGE was named 2001, 2005 and 2007 “Mailer of the Year” by the Greater Portland Postal Customer Council, and in 2002 PGE received the “Management Award” from the IPMA. In 2008 PGE received the Gold Award from NAPL. Wes has also received multiple “Top Presenter” and speaker awards from conference speaking.
Wes earned a B.S. in Business Administration from George Fox University, and a MBA from the University of Portland. For the past 24 years Wes has also been an award winning University Instructor, teaching graduate level business courses. He has become a regular speaker at regional Postal Customer Council and MSMA conferences, and national conferences like National Postal Forum, MailCom, CS Week, IPMA, TAWPI and XPLOR. Wes has had articles published by Mail Magazine, Today journal, Mailing Systems and Technology, Document, and Perspectives.
Wes is a member of ISM and other professional organizations, and sits on 5 different boards.
