The Association is a volunteer driven organization, governed by a Board of Directors. Volunteering to be on a committee or the Board of Directors doesn't mean long, tedious hours of research or time spent in meetings on top of your workload. Just a little bit of time can assist your association in reaching its goals.... and perhaps some of your own!

As a committee chairperson and as a board member, NSMA has helped me to define my career as a Supply and Logistics professional. I have learned valuable skills that can also be used on the job. It has allowed me to put into practice skills that I have learned, but don’t get to use as often as I would like. It has also exposed me to new ideas that are advancing the supply and logistics profession. However, I feel the most important value I have received from NSMA is the camaraderie of my fellow professionals. They give me a sounding board for ideas and a way to test new methodologies. This is really helpful when you are the only supply and logistics professional in the company.

NSMA is an organized advocacy to promote the the myriad complexities of this profession to self, colleagues, clients and company management. I've been prompted to learn new and enhance existing skills in the areas of supply, logistics, and a broad range of other professional soft skills. Membership offers many opportunities to stretch personal talents: profession-focused training meeting coordination and public speaking; and networking with co-horts from diverse industries. It is an honor to offer guidance/experience to others in this dynamic profession.

Harriet Naylor said it best when she said, “volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice one's ideals, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them.” My time with NSMA as Secretary/Treasurer has allowed me the opportunity to work with a great group of people to enhance the procurement profession in the Portland-Southwest Washington area by providing education and networking opportunities.

Being a part of one of the NSMA is an additional benefit to my purchasing career. Not only do I feel connected to the peers in my profession, keep up on the industry changes, but it is also an outlet for developing the skills and creativity that don’t get utilized at work. I’m excited about the committees, meetings, education seminars, and the relationships that have been created in my time with NSMA; it truly is a wonderful outlet and organization. I would encourage anyone in the purchasing profession to utilize the resources that NSMA makes available whether through volunteerism, the membership meetings or the continued education. It truly is a place where one can volunteer and connect with peers in the like profession who understand your ideals, motivations, and your passion.

Volunteering within NSMA has allowed me to meet a number of members, building my networking ability, and has kept me actively involved and contributing to our great organization. From facilitating C.P.M. courses (which in turn helped me complete my C.P.M. testing), to going outside my comfort zone and working on the Internet/Services committee and feeling a sense of accomplishment in helping redesign our organization’s website – have all added to the experience of being a member. I am currently serving a two-year term on the Board of Directors and enjoy helping set the direction of the organization and finding ways to benefit all of our members. I would encourage any member that has a desire to be involved further in the organization to start out volunteering on a committee, or with any short term tasks that a committee may need help with. You will find that it is fun and rewarding both personally and professionally!
